Consumer Product Nerve Injuries

Ganga et al. examines the prevalence, characteristics, and trends of consumer product-related nerve injuries (CPNIs) in patients presenting to emergency departments in the United States between 2012 and 2021. Using data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, the study categorizes injuries by age group, product type, and anatomical location, highlighting disparities in injury patterns among children, adults, and the elderly. The findings underscore the role of common household items such as stairs, bed frames, and exercise equipment in nerve injuries, while also exploring demographic variations and potential long-term implications. Given the rising incidence of CPNIs over the study period, what measures could be implemented to reduce these injuries and improve consumer product safety?

Neurotechnology to Treat Autoimmune Conditions?

Recent studies have demonstrated that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) can significantly reduce symptoms of autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In RA patients, clinical trials have shown that implanting a device to stimulate the vagus nerve inhibits the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like tumor necrosis factor (TNF), leading to decreased disease severity. Similarly, research in mouse models of colitis, a form of IBD, found that VNS reduced gut inflammation by modulating immune responses. Could this be the soon-to-come gold-standard modality of treatment for autoimmune diseases? click the link below to have a read!
